- ABOUT US -
Our community shop has provided an essential service to Bryher residents, day trippers and holiday makers alike since it was opened back in 2011.
THE HUB OF THE COMMUNITY
Bryher Shop and Post Office was started in 2011 by Zoe Dan when the previous post office and store closed. The shop is an independent general store which provides an extensive range of groceries to the local population of Bryher and to its year round visitors.
We took the shop over from Zoe in January 2019. Originally from Gloucestershire and Bristol, we have spent the last 9 years living and working in London. We’re keen to build on the amazing job that Zoe did over the last 8 years and hope to continue to sell as much local and Cornish produce as possible, whilst also looking at how we can reduce waste on the islands and operate in a more sustainable way.
The shop offers a comprehensive selection of fresh food and groceries, including vegetables, fruit, milk, meat, wine, soft drinks, ‘free from’ foods and all of your store cupboard essentials. There is an impressive delicatessen counter and freshly baked bread, pastries and Cornish pasties are available each day. The shop also acts as the islands Post Office where you can withdraw money and post those all important postcards. We aim to cover all bases and stock camping gear, chemist items, buckets and spades, stationary, greeting cards and a small selection of children’s toys.
If you are staying on Bryher you can visit our website and place an online order which we will deliver to your accommodation when you arrive.
Whether visiting for the day and in need of a picnic, or staying on the island at the beautiful campsite, Hell Bay hotel or in one of the fantastic holiday lets we hope to have everything that you’ll need to make your visit a memorable one.
To top it all off we have a lovely veranda with seating where you can enjoy a drink or an ice cream, with what we think is possibly the best view from a shop in the UK, but then we would say that wouldn’t we? We’d love you to come and say hello and see it for yourselves!
Bryher has a population of approximately 83 people although it increases in the summer months with the influx of seasonal staff. An archetypal small community Bryher is a network of familiarity and people work together both in their employment and for community events which are largely motivated by fundraising for island facilities.
Perhaps the most notorious community project was in 1989 when Anneka Rice, the presenter of BBC1’s “Challenge Anneka” television series, was approached by islanders to provide a low water jetty for the island over a weekend. The result was a utilitarian but sturdily constructed quay on the east side of the island facing Tresco across New Grimsby Sound. The new quay immensely improved access giving a huge boost to the island’s economy which depends so much on tourism.
Many loyal August visitors will be aware of the annual fete which is always an incredibly popular attraction and features live music, BBQ, bar, raffle, bouncy castle, jumble, competitions, games and lots more. The fete is in aid of the Community Centre Fund which supports the newly built community centre to provide recreational facilities for the whole community.
On 3rd July 2012, Prince Charles and Camilla visited Bryher as part of a tour to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee and Charles’ 60th year as the Duke of Cornwall. They visited us at Bryher Shop as one of the most recently completed Duchy of Cornwall projects. Prince Charles looked around the shop and even asked for a slice of our locally renowned Tatty Cake for the helicopter ride home!
